Open Door Community Project
Open Door Community Project.
The Open Door Community Project was awarded an Awards for All, Lottery Grant which enabled the group of volunteer creative individuals to proceed with the project. Upcher secured a lease on Unit 29 on the Weybourne Road, Industrial Estate in Sheringham as a base and events ideas have gained pace.
One of the first projects was to take part in the two carnivals Sheringham and Cromer. The theme was a 'walking art galley' and featured youngsters from the primary school.
They won 2nd in their class in Sheringham and 1st in their Class at Cromer and received the Randall Cup, which the youngsters are taking in turns to take home and show to parents and grandparents.
The group have also provided a succession of workshops available to all at the Upcher shop, and at the Unit.

Christmas Lights.

This year the Open Door group took over the responsibility of organising the Sheringham Christmas Lights Switch On, The group decided to attempt something different and transformed the town of Sheringham into 'Pantoland'. 9 themed boards were painted with scenes form favourite pantomimes and attached to buildings in and around the town, the Town Clock was also turned into a Gingerbread House and made an ideal grotto for when Father Christmas visited in the afternoon. All the paintings remained in place until the 7th January, only one received wind damage and a replacement was quickly painted. A competion sheet was availabe for the younger residents and visitors to the town and the lucky winner received a free family swim pass to the 'Splash' Leisure Pool in Sheringham. The 2 runners up recived £10 vouchers from 'Toymaster' Starlings Store in the High Street.

The Open Door group has taken an active role in the Crab & Lobster Festival & the Sheringham Carnival, with the town clock facade again being changed with childrens designs of sea monsters. A graffiti workshop took place on the seafront and several workshops were arranged for the school holidays.
The open Door Community Art Project float this year carried on the theme of life under the sea and featured a large octopus who had caught fishermen in his tentacles accompanied by a large shoal of jellyfish.
The float won first place in their class and 1st place overall in the Sheringham Carnival, and came 2nd in their class at the Cromer Carnival, once again a huge thank-you is given to Becky Robinson who cam up with the idea and has mentored the community group with several workshops.
The group will once again be taking on the challenge of organising the christmas lights switch-on.
The group have a full programme for the forthcoming 12 months and further details of workshops to take place around the villages in the area will be available soon.
